Around the year 1528, Lucía Miranda and her husband, the young Spanish soldier Sebastián Hurtado, are living in the Santo Espíritu fortress on the banks of the river Paraná. Their best friend is Mangora, the Chieftain of the local Timbúe people, who falls in love with Lucía. Taking advantage of Sebastián’s absence, he attacks the fortress and kidnaps the hapless Lucía . . .
Rosa Guerra (1834-1864) was an Argentine teacher, writer and journalist. She wrote this novella about the mythical heroine Lucía Miranda in a fortnight, with a view to presenting it at a literary competition which never actually took place. Her friends persuaded her to publish it in 1860, and it has since become a classic work within the Argentine literary canon.
